GOLD RUSH This solution is copyright, but may be freely distributed as long as the copyright notice below remains intact. c2000 Philip M Reynolds The game takes place in 1848, and begins in Brooklyn Heights, New York. Your name is Jerrod Wilson, you work in a newspaper office, and you're not very satisfied with life. The object of the game is to travel from New York to California and strike it rich! There are two time limits during the first part of the game, you have 14 minutes from the time the game starts until the gold rush begins. When this happens, your possessions drop in value and the price of anything you buy goes up. Therefore, you must have completed all your transactions before then. The second time limit is the departure of the ship if you choose to go via either of the sea routes the ship will depart 18 minutes from the time the game starts. It is advisable just to walk around and learn the location of everything, then restart the game. There are three routes to California the sea route via Cape Horn, the sea and land route via Panama and the overland route. Depending on which route you take, you must accumulate different items in Brooklyn. BROOKLYN HEIGHTS You start the game on a bridge facing east, Cross the bridge and go south to the street corner, your house is number 10 on the corner. UNLOCK the GATE then go up to the door and UNLOCK the DOOR, go inside and into the room on the right. EXAMINE the BOOK on the table and GET the family PHOTO that brings back all those memories. Go over to the desk and CLOSE the DESK then EXAMINE the DESK and GET the bank STATEMENT, READ the STATEMENT to find your bank account number, this will be different each time you play the game. Leave the house and since you are going to California, SELL the HOUSE, a buyer will eventually come along and you can either wait for him, or just leave and come back later. Don't worry if you get a message that he left, he will return again, he will offer you $850 for your house accept his offer. Walk west along the street and go up to the steps of the gazebo. Do not walk on the grass, or a cop will come and take a point away from you! PICK some FLOWERS then enter the gazebo. Examine the FLOOR then EXAMINE the CRACK in the floor,. Keep moving around and examining the cracks until you see a gold coin, GET the COIN then move back onto the street and go west. Enter the Post Office on the corner and go over to the desk, RING the BELL and when the man ask what you want GET MAIL. If he says you have none, leave and try again a bit later on. When he says that you have a letter, GET the LETTER then EXAMINE the LETTER. EXAMINE the POSTMARK, it's from Fort Sutter, then EXAMINE the STAMP, there is something under the stamp so LOOK UNDER the STAMP to find a Gold Flake. OPEN the LETTER then READ the LETTER, your brother has found gold and wants you to come join him. Leave the post office then follow the street south, enter the large white building (your Newspaper's Office) and go through the door at the back of the room then go either left of right to come out on the floor above. Go into your office, the last one on the right and EXAMINE your DESK, EXAMINE the BLOTTER then READ the CLIPPINGS under it. Go back downstairs and into your bosses office, the one at the bottom left and as your leaving for the west, QUIT you JOB. Leave the building then go south and east into the Cemetery, go over to the two identical gravestones at the back right of the screen and READ each of the GRAVESTONE's, PUT the FLOWERS ON the GRAVE then leave the cemetery and return to the street outside the post office. Go north and enter the bank, move over to the left hand window and when the teller asks what you want, GET MONEY then enter the account number from the bank statement, after you have your money leave the bank and go north then west into the warehouse. EXAMINE the POSTER on the pillar to find the address of where you can get tickets for the boat. Up to this point, everything you need to accomplish in Brooklyn is the same, no matter which route you plan to take to get to California. However from here the solution will differ dependant on which route you take. THE CAPE HORN ROUTE Go back to your house then east and stand by the gate to number 12, when your neighbour appears, BUY TICKET and answer the questions the man asks you, and tell him which ticket you want. The price of the tickets will skyrocket after the Gold Rush starts, make sure you buy them before then. Once you have the ticket head west to the stage office then north and enter the grocers shop, BUY FRUIT then leave the grocers then go east then north and board the ship once on the ship you can either wait until the ship sails or SHOW the TICKET to have the ship sail immediately. Before you set sail make sure that you save the game as during the voyage there are two completely random events and should either of these occur you will have to restore the saved position from here as any saved position after you have sailed will make the same event happen, one random event will have you dying of Cholera during the voyage the other will have the ship sink during the rounding of the horn. Another event that can befall you is dying of Scurvy during the voyage this will definitely happen you have not bought the fruit, but if you have bought it you are safe from this fate. The voyage will be shown as two different views, on of the ship where you can do actions and a map showing the ships progress with messages about the voyage where you can do nothing other than watch and read the messages. Do not pick up anything you find on the ship until after the storm as you will loose it. During the first scene on the ship, explore the ship EXAMINE the ENGINES and note the metal scraps, note the shovel in the boiler room and note the locations of the bunk room, chef and Captains Cabin. G to the upper deck and to the bow of the ship, there is a man here reading, TALK TO the MAN and he will give you a bible (this is the only item you won't loose during the storm). Do not stand on the deck during the storm, or you'll get swept overboard. Once the message has come up that everything has been thrown overboard, go to the bunk room and EXAMINE the FLOOR, GET the STRING then go to the Engine room and GET the metal SCRAPS. Continue forward to the Captains Cabin and EXAMINE the DESK, GET the PAPER CLIP from the floor. At the next scene speed is of the essence, go down to the boiler room and GET the STICK (remains of shovel), then go up to the Chef and GET the HAM from the table and then go back up on deck and to the stern of the ship and FISH, if you are not quick enough you will be too week to fish and die of starvation. Just restore and try again until you succeed and the game continues until you arrive in Sacramento. THE PANAMA ROUTE Go back to your house then east and stand by the gate to number 12, when your neighbour appears, BUY TICKET and answer the questions the man asks you, and tell him which ticket you want. The price of the tickets will skyrocket after the Gold Rush starts, make sure you buy them before then. Once you have the ticket head west to the stage office then north and enter the hardware shop, BUY a mosquito NET then leave the grocers then go east then north and board the ship once on the ship you can either wait until the ship sails or SHOW the TICKET to have the ship sail immediately. There is nothing to do on the ship, but whilst on the boat up river you will be stopped by natives, answer yes when asked if you will give them all your valuables, you can also die of malaria whilst on the boat but you are safe from the mosquito bites if you bought the mosquito net. When you reach the jungle you will have to follow the rest of the passengers. TALK TO the MAN under the tree, and he will give you a Bible, then continue along the path, at the bottom of the screen is a hanging vine and just as you approach it, killer jungle ants will appear. Quickly move over to the vine and JUMP ON the VINE, wait until the ants leave then LET GO and continue east along the path onto the next screen. There are four paths through this screen, but it is difficult to see them, the two lower paths lead to untimely deaths at the hands of a snake and a poisonous thorny bush. The two upper paths will get you across to the other side but you need to take the top path as it is only on this path that you will you hit something with your foot, as you walk you go ouch!, LOOK DOWN and GET the GOLD DISK you find in the undergrowth, then continue along the path onto the next screen. The next screen is totally trial and error so save the game before continuing. Cross the river there is quicksand below the surface so you will have to just move up and down the screen as you go across to find a safe path, another random element is a crocodile which will appear and eat you as you cross if this appears just restore and try again. Once across the river continue east and the game continues by itself until you reach Sacramento. OVERLAND Go back to the News Paper Office then west to the Stage office, enter and BUY a TICKET then PAY FOR the TICKET and leave, go east to the Livery Stable and SHOW the TICKET to the little guy in white. He will escort you to the coach, GET ON the COACH and watch the scenes until you reach Independence. Once you join up with the mining company, go east to find a man sitting reading, TALK TO the MAN and he will give you a bible. Return west and go over to the group of three men at the right of the screen and, TALK TO the MAN AND Captain tells you that they need a contribution, so GIVE him your MONEY, he then asks you to buy animals for the trip. Go south and TALK TO the MAN watching the corral, BUY ANIMALS and select MATURE OXEN from what he offers, young oxen will not be able to survive the heat of the desert, and Indians often attack travellers to steal their mules. Go back to the camp and TALK TO the CAPTAIN again, he wants you to tell him when it's time to leave. Go up a screen, and keep LOOKing AT the GRASS, as soon as you get a message saying that the ground is getting greener and drying up, go back and TALK TO the CAPTAIN to tell him its time to leave. Watch the scenes of the journey and if you have done everything right up to now you will have no trouble until you reach a steep hill. UNHITCH the TEAM to allow them to go down and drink without dragging the wagon over the cliff. Then when they come back LOCK the WHEELS of the wagon to stop it running out of control down the hill. Continue watching the scenes until you get thirsty, go over to the abandoned wagon and EXAMINE the WAGON, OPEN the water BARREL and DRINK the WATER then LOOK IN the WAGON and GET the MEAT then EAT the MEAT, you can now go west to continue your journey until you reach Sutters Fort. SACRAMENTO Whichever way you arrive, you must immediately go to the stagecoach office, it is in the building just to the right of the street running north. Go in, and LOOK, EXAMINE the SCHEDULE, if you have missed the stagecoach to Sutter's Fort, you will have to restore; otherwise, GET ON the stagecoach to travel to Sutter's Fort. SUTTER'S FORT ONWARD Go west from the entrance to the fort to the Blacksmiths, go in and TALK TO the BLACKSMITH, tell the Blacksmith your name is Jerrod Wilson, you are from Brooklyn, New York, and your brother's name is Jake. He will then give you your brother's branding iron. Leave the Blacksmith and go west then out to the graveyard, READ the GRAVESTONEs until you find your father's. Note the cannon at the top, then READ PSALM 23 in your Bible. The phrase "Green Pastures" is in capital letters. USE the LETTER on the grave stone then move it around until you are told it's in place. Note which letters are still visible, they make up the words ROOM 12, or is it ROOM 21? Go back into the fort and go south, go over to the door beside the hitching post and go inside, LOOK around and BUY a gold PAN, GIVE the GOLD COIN to the store keeper then leave the store. It is now time to try your luck at finding gold, leave the fort and go east to the stream, when the scene changes from the map view walk into the stream and continue east in the stream until you are over 10 miles from the fort. PAN FOR GOLD and keep doing this until you have found gold 50 times. Do not pan if there is anyone else in the scene, or you will be hung! Once you have all your gold, save the game then go back to the fort, watch out for the thieves: They'll take everything away from you. Go back to the store where you got the pan, and BUY a SHOVEL and a LANTERN, GIVE GOLD to the clerk for both. Go over to the man standing at the mill and BUY a MULE from him, GIVE him GOLD for the mule then lead the mule to the Blacksmiths, HEAT the IRON in the Blacksmiths then BRAND the MULE with the iron. Now lead your mule out of the gates of the fort and into the corral just to the right of the gates, the corral man will inspect your mule then let you in. LOOK AT the BRANDs of all the other mules in the corral until you find the one with your brand on it. If it says it's a stubborn mule, LEAVE your MULE and GET the stubborn MULE, then leave the corral, the corral man will check the mule as you leave but will think that it's the same one you brought in and let you go. Travel east next to the stream where you panned for gold until you are 16 miles east and zero miles south of the fort. Continue east past a sawmill then at the edge of town south and east to the Green Pastures Hotel. TIE up your MULE TO the POST outside then go inside BOOK ROOM 12 and the man behind the desk tells you they haven't got a room 12, try to BOOK ROOM 11 but he tells you that room 11 is already occupied, but then asks if you will do him a favour and deliver a message to room 11. Answer yes then go upstairs and KNOCK ON the DOOR of room 11, when the man comes to the door GIVE him the MESSAGE and he will rush off. Go into room 11 and note the cannon above the fireplace, remember the cannon on your fathers gravestone, TURN the WHEEL of the cannon and the back of the fireplace will open. ENTER the FIREPLACE and you are now in room 12. GET the STRING from the floor then GET the MAGNET and the NOTE from the table. READ the NOTE then go over to the window and OPEN the WINDOW, it is latched so UNLATCH the WINDOW and OPEN the WINDOW. Wait until a bird flies in then LOOK at the BIRD, EXAMINE the CAPSULE then PUT the PHOTOGRAPH IN the CAPSULE. Wait for the bird to fly off and then return, EXAMINE the CAPSULE and GET the AEROGRAM, READ the AEROGRAM then go back over to the window and LOOK OUT OF the WINDOW. CLIMB THROUGH the WINDOW onto the ledge outside the edge along the ledge towards the window to the left. Stop by the window and wait until the man inside moves across to the right then edge passed the widow to the balcony at the end of the hotel, go through the door then downstairs and out of the hotel. The message from your brother said to follow a Stubborn friend, who does both you and your brother know that's stubborn, what about his mule? GET the MULE again and lead it out of town then FOLLOW the MULE and it will lead you to Jakes home, it moves quite quickly so make sure you don't lose it. When you reach Jake's home, go inside and EXAMINE the TABLE, GET the MATCHES from the table then go back outside and into the outhouse. ENTER the HOLE of the TOILET to come out into a mine tunnel. LIGHT your LANTERN and proceed down the cave, do this as quickly as you can; save whenever you make progress because you only have a limited amount of oil in the lantern. You reach a door that's locked, and you have no key, but there's a hole in the door, and it's the same shape as the branding iron! TIE the STRING TO the MAGNET and PUT MAGNET IN the HOLE in the door, LOWER the MAGNET and it will pick up something on the other side of the door, PULL the STRING to retrieve a key then UNLOCK the DOOR with the key. Go through and down the ladder then follow the tunnel to the left to another ladder, go down this ladder and GET the PICK at the bottom. USE the PICK on the walls of the cave until you find some gold, GET the GOLD then go up the ladder and back into the passage you came along, USE the PICK on the walls of the passage until you find some gold, GET the GOLD explore the passage using the pick until you have found gold three times, return to the ladder and go up to the top, GET the GOLD next to the ladder then go back down until you see a black rock lying over the ladder. Line your feet up with the top of the black rock, and walk to your left. USE the PICK on the walls of the passage until you find some gold, GET the GOLD explore the passage using the pick until you have found gold three times, also get any gold you see along the passage. Go down the next ladder and again USE the PICK on the walls of the passage until you find some gold, GET the GOLD explore the passage using the pick until you have found gold again, also get any gold you see along the passage. At the end of this passage id a large cave where you find your brother, by now you should have found nine lots of gold by digging for it and found six lots of gold lying on the surface. After talking to your brother get the two pieces of gold in the back wall of the cave then USE the PICK three times on the back wall between where the two pieces were. Get the three piece of gold you uncover then USE the PICK again in the same place until you have a hole big enough the climb through. Enter the hole and you have found the mother lode and you and your brother now have as much gold as you could ever dream of! Game completed.
